Bluegrass Rural is a 527 whose mission is focused on voter education in rural Kentucky. With 45% of its residents classified as rural, The Bluegrass State is the nation’s 9th most-rural state. Of the 120 counties, 85 are rural.
President Thomas Jefferson once counseled that “an informed populace makes wise decisions.” Yet, today, in an age of increasing media consolidation, rural voters are often ill-served by print outlets that are understaffed and under resourced and electronic media that have hyper-partisan agendas. Media consolidation and cutbacks in staff at print media outlets especially, have meant that rural residents are often left in the dark about the ramifications resulting from the votes and actions of their elected officials in Washington and Frankfort.
